See mõte, et me peaksime “Issandat kartma” on kirjas mitmeid tosinaid kordi Vanas Testamendis. “Kartust” võib leida ka Uues Testamendis. Paganaid, kes uskusid Jumalasse kutsuti Jumalakartlikeks, ja öeldi, et varajane kogudus sai üles ehitatud “Issanda kartuses” (Ap 9:31). Miks räägitakse Piiblis nii palju hirmust?
Et lahendada seda müsteeriumit, on sul vaja teada, et sel sõnal, mida me tõlgime “kartusena”, on palju laiem tähendus, kui meil inglise keeles. Meie jaoks on “kartus” vastassõna usaldusele, ja selle sünonüümid on hirm ja pelgus. Samaväärne sõna heebrea keeles, yirah (hääldatakse YEER-ah) hõlmab endas negatiivseid tähendusi, (nagu hirm, kartus) kui ka positiivseid tähendusi (nagu ülistus, austus), pehmest tähendusest (nagu näiteks austus) kuni tugevateni(nagu aukartus) Usu või mitte, iga kord, kui sa loed inglise keeles sõna “austus” või “aupaklikus”, siis heebrea keelne sõna selle taga on yirah!
Vaatame 3. Moosese raamat 19:3, kus Jumal annab käsu, “yirah” oma ema ja isa. King James Versioon ütleb, et me peaksime neid kartma, kuid teised Piibli tõlked selgitavad, et see mõte siin on tegelikult “ lugupidamine” või “austus”

Siit sa näed, et isegi, kui Yirah võib tähendada hirmu, võib see sama sõna ka tähendada midagi hoopis teistsugust, midagi, mis on lähemal “aukartusele”, “lugupidamisele” või “aupaklikusele”. Tihti on väga hea, kui sul on lugemise ajal kõik need sõnad mõttes.

Kui sa oled alati arvanud, et Jumal ootab, et sa väriseksid hirmust Tema ees, siis sõna “hirm” laiema tähenduse tundmine võib muuta seda, kuidas sa Jumalat näed!
Mõnikord on yirahl veel üks teine tähendus. Selle asemel, et viidata emotsioonidele, nagu “hirm” või “imetlus”, võib see viidata sellele, kuidas need saavad välja elatud “ülistuse” tegevuses.
